Government New Fund: Taking Local Buildings and Spaces into Community Ownership

The UK Government has announced a series of new measures aimed at giving communities greater influence over the future of their local areas. As part of the "Communities in Charge" initiative, funding will be made available to help protect valued local assets such as pubs, shops, community centres and other important spaces that are at risk of being lost. The plans are intended to make it easier for local groups to take ownership of these assets, helping to preserve services that bring people together and support local economies.

Alongside financial support, the government is introducing reforms designed to strengthen community rights and encourage greater local involvement in decision-making. The initiative forms part of a wider strategy to revitalise high streets, increase community ownership and ensure local people have a stronger voice in shaping the places where they live. By supporting communities to safeguard important buildings and services, the programme aims to build more resilient, connected neighbourhoods while protecting the character and identity of towns and villages across the country.
