Health Equals is calling for stronger action to tackle health inequalities by making health a shared responsibility across all areas of government, rather than leaving it solely to the healthcare system. The campaign argues that factors such as housing, employment, education, income, transport and the environment have a significant influence on people's health and life expectancy, and that these should be considered in every major policy decision.
To achieve this, Health Equals is advocating for new legislation that would require governments to develop a long-term, cross-government strategy with clear targets, regular progress reporting and greater accountability for reducing health inequalities. The organisation believes that embedding health into national decision-making would help create lasting improvements in wellbeing while reducing the gap in healthy life expectancy across the UK. Alongside its policy work, the coalition continues to support evidence-based campaigns focused on improving the key "building blocks of health", including safe housing, secure employment, strong communities, clean environments and opportunities for children and young people to thrive.
