New research highlighted by Charity Digital is encouraging charities to pay closer attention to the emotional consistency of their fundraising campaigns, with studies showing that donors are more likely to give when images, videos, and written messaging all share the same emotional tone. Researchers found that campaigns using hopeful imagery alongside positive messaging, or urgent imagery paired with urgent language, generated stronger donor responses and higher donation amounts than campaigns with mixed emotional signals.
The findings are based on behavioural research involving real donation decisions, where participants were given money to either donate or keep before viewing a range of charity appeals. According to the study, campaigns with inconsistent emotional messaging — such as distressing images paired with hopeful wording — were significantly less effective. Researchers believe emotionally aligned campaigns create a more positive and trustworthy experience for donors, activating reward responses in the brain that can encourage generosity.
The report also highlights the growing importance of consistent branding, storytelling, and tone of voice across digital platforms. Charity experts say emotional connection remains one of the most important elements of successful fundraising, particularly as charities compete for public attention online. This includes using consistent colours, language, imagery, and storytelling styles across websites, social media, emails, and fundraising appeals to help build trust and recognition with supporters.
Sector leaders say the research offers practical lessons for charities of all sizes, especially smaller organisations working with limited budgets. Rather than requiring expensive marketing campaigns, the guidance suggests that simple improvements to consistency in messaging and emotional tone could significantly improve donor engagement and fundraising performance. The findings form part of wider discussions around psychology, storytelling, and supporter behaviour within the third sector as charities continue adapting their digital fundraising strategies.
